General & Safety

Is cataract surgery in India safe for international patients?

Cataract surgery is one of the most commonly performed eye procedures. Safety depends on the patient's individual condition, the treating ophthalmologist, the hospital and the clinical protocols followed. CataractCare India helps international patients identify suitable partner hospitals and specialists so they can make an informed decision.

How do I know whether I actually need cataract surgery?

A qualified ophthalmologist should assess your vision, cataract severity and overall eye health before recommending surgery. If you already have medical reports, scans or previous eye examination records, you can share them with our team so that we can help arrange an appropriate consultation.

Can I ask for a second opinion?

Yes. A second medical opinion can be useful when deciding whether surgery is appropriate or which treatment option is best suited to your eyes. We can help coordinate a consultation with an appropriate ophthalmology specialist.

Can a family member travel with me?

Yes. Many international patients prefer to travel with a family member or companion. Let your patient coordinator know in advance so that accommodation, airport transfers and other arrangements can be planned accordingly.

Cataract Surgery

Is cataract surgery painful?

Cataract surgery is generally performed using local or topical anaesthesia. Most patients do not experience significant pain during the procedure, although they may notice pressure, touching or other sensations. Your surgeon will explain the anaesthesia and procedure before surgery.

How long does cataract surgery take?

The surgical procedure itself is usually relatively short, but the complete hospital visit can take longer because of pre-operative preparation, testing and post-operative observation. Your hospital will provide your specific schedule.

Can both eyes be treated during the same trip?

In some cases both eyes can be treated during the same trip, but the timing depends on your diagnosis, eye health, surgeon's recommendation and recovery. The treating ophthalmologist will decide the appropriate schedule.

Will I need glasses after cataract surgery?

That depends on the type of intraocular lens selected, your eye health and your visual requirements. Different lens options can provide different ranges of vision. Your ophthalmologist will discuss suitable options and their advantages, limitations and costs with you.

What is an intraocular lens?

An intraocular lens, commonly called an IOL, is an artificial lens implanted inside the eye after the cloudy natural lens is removed during cataract surgery. Different types of IOLs may be available depending on the patient's needs.

Other Eye Conditions

Can you help with retina problems as well?

Yes. CataractCare India can help international patients enquire about a range of eye-care services, including selected retina conditions. Treatment availability depends on the diagnosis and the specialists available through our partner network.

Can I have a retina check-up during my cataract trip?

Depending on your requirements, a retina assessment may be coordinated during the same trip. Tell us about your existing diagnosis and reports when contacting our team so we can help plan the appropriate consultation.

Do you provide treatment for myopia or refractive problems?

Treatment options depend on the patient's age, prescription, corneal condition, eye health and other clinical factors. A specialist assessment is required before deciding whether LASIK, lens-based treatment or another option may be appropriate.

Cost & Payment

How much does cataract surgery cost in India?

There is no single price for cataract surgery. Cost can vary according to the hospital, surgeon, surgical technique, intraocular lens and the patient's individual clinical requirements. After reviewing your case, we can help you understand the treatment options and expected costs.

Will I receive an itemised estimate?

Where available, we help international patients understand the expected treatment costs before they travel. The final medical estimate is provided by the treating hospital and may depend on findings during the in-person examination.

Does the treatment package include accommodation?

Accommodation arrangements can be made through our international patient support service depending on the patient's selected package and requirements. We can discuss hotel or homely-stay options near the hospital before your arrival.

What payment methods are available?

Payment options depend on the selected hospital and treatment provider. Your patient coordinator can confirm the available payment methods, timelines and any advance payment requirements before your trip.

Can I use my insurance for treatment in India?

This depends entirely on your insurance policy and whether treatment outside your home country is covered. We can provide available medical documents and invoices from the treating hospital to support your reimbursement process where applicable.

Travel & Visa

Can I travel from Thailand to India for cataract surgery?

Yes. Patients living in Thailand can enquire about travelling to India for cataract treatment. We can help coordinate the medical consultation, hospital selection, travel dates, accommodation, airport transfer and local assistance based on the patient's requirements.

Do I need a medical visa for India?

Visa requirements depend on your nationality, purpose of travel and current Indian immigration regulations. Our team can guide you through the general medical travel documentation process and help coordinate relevant medical documents from the hospital where applicable.

Can you help me with my visa documentation?

We can assist with the medical documentation and coordination required for your treatment journey. The final visa application and approval are handled according to the requirements of the Indian authorities and the patient's nationality.

Do you arrange airport pickup?

Airport transfer assistance can be arranged for international patients according to their confirmed travel and accommodation plan. Your coordinator will discuss the arrival details with you before your trip.

How many days should I stay in India?

The ideal length of stay depends on your treatment, the surgeon's follow-up requirements and your recovery. Your coordinator will help create a practical itinerary before you book your flights.

Recovery & Follow-up

How soon can I fly home after cataract surgery?

What should I avoid after cataract surgery?

Your surgeon will provide specific post-operative instructions. These may include using prescribed eye drops, avoiding eye rubbing, protecting the eye and temporarily avoiding certain activities. Always follow the instructions provided by your treating doctor.

What happens if I have a concern after returning home?

If you experience a concerning symptom after returning home, you should contact an eye-care professional promptly and follow your surgeon's emergency instructions. Where appropriate, our team can help coordinate communication with the hospital that treated you.

Will I receive follow-up support after leaving India?

Follow-up arrangements depend on your treatment and service plan. Where appropriate, we can help coordinate remote communication with your treating hospital or assist you in understanding the next steps recommended by your doctor.
